Staunton, June 3 – By his actions, Vladimir Putin has transformed Russia into a living monument to George Orwell, not his criticism but his description of what the world would look like in a totalitarian future, Russians now say, according to the latest collection of Russian anecdotes offered by Moscow journalist Tatyana Pushkaryova (publizist.ru/blogs/107374/43077/-).

Among the best of the rest:

·       The Russian army went to Ukraine in peace as it expected to be greeted by the population with bread and salt. A war happened only when the Ukrainians decided to resist their arrival.

 ·       Any change in power is bad because it allows new leaders to blame everything on their predecessors. In this, Putin has introduced one innovation: he blames everything not on his immediate predecessor who after all appointed him but on World War II and before that Lenin.

 ·       Putin has achieved another great breakthrough. He has shown that the speed of darkness is even faster than the speed of light.

 ·       There really is an anti-Russian conspiracy: it consists of the entire adult population of the country.

 ·       After Moscow abolished the death penalty, ever more Russians sought training in that specialty confident it would be needed. Russian television personality Solovyev even offered to offer special video courses to improve the skills of these future executioners.

·       If sanctions only help us as some in Moscow say, why didn’t Russia take action even earlier to force the West to impose them. Just think how well off we’d be then.

 ·       The West is trying to impose freedom, fair elections and separation of powers on Russia in order to enslave it. But unfortunately it has no chance of succeeding.

 ·       Any stock carrying a baby to Russia isn’t going to look that child in the eye.

 ·       Russians are divided into two extremes: the extremely stupid who are happy with the way things are, and the extremists who aren’t.
